4/2/2010 Please join me at the upcoming show at OK Hotel September and October 2010!

4/2/2010 My giant tree stump will be in a show called "Critical Messages" by Western Washington University and funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. The show starts at Western Gallery on April 12th and then travels to Willamette University and Boise Art Museum.

3/1/2010 I have a piece in Oregon State University's show "Chance to Flourish". The show runs from March 1-30, 2010. More info at: http://agsci.oregonstate.edu/art/wild-gardens.

9/19/2009 Bumbershoot was great! Got a few more shows coming up...specifics to follow.

9/15/2009 Here's what Knute Berger said about the stump in his review of the "Envision Cascadia" show:

Another standout is what appears to be an actual cedar stump in the middle of the gallery floor, but on closer inspection turns out to be a stump carefully and intricately constructed from shredded corrugated cardboard boxes by sculptor Karen Rudd. It's a beautifully unnerving piece because of its hyper-realism and the shocking truth of its component parts, how the tightly wrapped layers of cardboard mimic the growth-rings of a tree, how the edges of cut cardboard imitate so perfectly the scraggly bark of an old red cedar. Here is the Northwest regurgitating its natural perfection: a old growth tree recycled into an imitation tree stump called art that, outdoors, could fool a weekend hiker into thinking it's the real, dead thing. It also redefines the ordinary cardboard box as really just a different manifestation of a tree stump. And you thought paper bags were better than plastic at the local co-op?

6/22/09 One of the large tree stumps will be exhibited in the "Cascadia" show at the Port Angeles Fine Art Center (www.pafac.org). The opening is July 5th. I like this venue!

6/22/09 I will have a few glass and metal pieces in the "Glass, Metal and Stone" show at Matzke Fine Art and Design. It opens July 11th and will run through September. More info at www.matzkefineart.com.

5/15/09 I'm on Facebook now.

4/30/09 An exhibition at Bumbershoot 2009 will include my largest cardboard tree stump sculpture -- the one that was part of the Centrum installation. This is only the second time this large sculpture has left my studio and the first time it will show in Seattle!

3/15/09 The Canoe Club, a member-based artist club, will be holding its grand opening on Sunday, March 15 at 4pm at 409 7th Avenue (location of the former Wing Luke Museum.) Two of my large tree stump sculptures will be there!

3/1/09 I'm pleased to announce that "Last Stand", one of my cardboard tree stumps, took first place in 3D Arts in the CVG Show in Bremerton, Washington this winter. Here's what Marie Weichman of Olympic College had to say about it in the CVG Newsletter:

"There is one piece [in the show] that makes getting out of the house worth every bit of effort. "Last Stand," by Karen Rudd is not only the smartest piece of art in the show, but also, socio-politically speaking, one of the most currently relevant works in the show. At a distance this piece looks like nothing more than a tree trunk, but upon closer inspection it is made of, (I pause here to consider not telling you, thereby saving the surprise, but...), scrap pieces of recycled cardboard and glue. Nothing more."
